RefWorks: Get Started

Guide to help you make the best use of Refworks bibliographic software

What is Refworks?

Please note, RefWorks is not currently available on campus computers. We are working to get this fixed as soon as possible.

RefWorks is web-based bibliographic software that enables you to:

  • create your own collection of bibliographic references;
  • store and organise your references in a personal account online, accessible wherever you have access to the internet;
  • export references from Google Scholar, online databases and ejournal packages or create references manually;
  • insert your citations into Word with the click of a button, while you write your assignments;
  • produce a bibliography in seconds in a specified style, with thousands of available output styles.

This library guide will take you through the steps of learning how to use Refworks: simply work through the tabs at the top of the page.

All current King's staff and students are able to sign up for a personal account for Refworks.

RefWorks is also available for all King's alumni:

  1. Alumni will need to first register with the Alumni community. NB - this process takes three (3) working days to complete
  2. When your registration is complete you can retrieve the special RefWorks group registration code for King's alumni from the Alumni community pages.
  3. Use these registration detail to access RefWorks as an alumnus.

Accessing Refworks and Creating an Account

To log on to Refworks or create a new account

  1. Go to the RefWorks logon page for King's users
  2. If you already have a Refworks account, enter your usual King’s username and password.  You may then need to choose King's College London, as your institution.
  3. If you don't have an account, you will need to register the first time you use Refworks, filling in a form with a few basic details.

Training on Refworks

A range of interactive e-learning materials focusing on using RefWorks is available in our KLaSS e-learning on KEATS.

If you feel you would benefit from working through these in a group workshop, these run during term time and can be booked via the below calendar. Bookings are taken on a first come, first served basis.
