What is Festive Feedback - and why does it matter?
Every year during the festive season, we invite everyone in the King’s community to take part in Festive Feedback - our fun but meaningful way of collecting your honest thoughts about and hopes for your libraries.
It works like this:
🎄 Write your festive wish or feedback on a tag and hang it on one of our library Christmas trees
🎁 Or pop a note into the Naughty or Nice box to tell us what you love, what frustrates you, what you might want or change and why!
In December 2024, you filled our trees and boxes with 74 pieces of feedback. Since then, we’ve carefully reviewed every comment and shared them with the right teams to help us improve our spaces and services.
Your feedback really does shape what we do. Whether it’s a heartfelt thank you, a request for Santa to adjust the temperatures, or a passionate plea for more plug sockets – we look forward to reading every one of them!
This blog is here to:
Show what you told us last year
Share what’s changed and what services are available
Let you know that Festive Feedback will be returning in 2025
The Naughty List
🕒 IoPPN Opening Hours
💬 “Extending opening hours past 5pm is great!”
💬 “Why is it closed at 6?”
What we did:
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) Library now stays open until 01:00 AM on weekdays, with security staff on site.
🔌 Study Spaces, Privacy & Plug Sockets
💬 “More protected quiet study spaces!”
💬 “We love the plug and play desks! More please!”
💬 “Need more study pods...”
What we did:
Added more booth seating in Franklin Wilkins Library to create semi-private group areas.
Supported the installation of more plug-and-play desks across multiple library sites.
What we’re exploring:
We know many of you would like more pod-style, enclosed, or soundproof rooms across our libraries. We’re unable to provide additional spaces at the moment, but your feedback has been shared, and this demand will be taken into account when planning future improvements.
❄️ Heating, Temperature & Hot Water
💬 “Dear Santa, please turn on the heating in the Maughan Library.”
💬 “Hi, my fav library! Add more aircon 'cause I’m cold.”
💬 “Hot water needed. The warmth stays with you.”
What we did:
We frequently share temperature-related feedback with Estates & Facilities, who are working on the inconsistent heating at Maughan, WEC and NHH libraries.
What you can do right now:
Library staff can direct you to warmer or cooler areas in our libraries at our Information Points during our staffed hours or our live LibChat staffed by librarians 24/7.
We had a wish for hot water at the Weston Education Centre Library, so we're happy to share that there are self-service coffee machines, microwaves and water stations available on the ground floor of the WEC Refectory from 8:30-15:00.
The IoPPN café and canteen are also open on the second floor and are great spaces to warm up. You’ll find hot and cold drinks, snacks, pastries, and hot food, plus a microwave and water fountain. Full details here.
🔇 Noise, Quiet Spaces & Respectful Study
💬 “Please make people quieter!!! Please.”
💬 “Naughty people aren’t quiet!”
💬 “More protected quiet study spaces!”
What we did and continue to do:
We know how important quiet is for studying — and it’s something many of you mentioned. Every King’s library has silent, quiet, and discussion zones so you can find the right space for how you work. Your feedback helps us keep study spaces peaceful and productive for everyone.
If things get too noisy, you can text our Noise Line on 07883 303052, telling us your location (library and room, for example “Disruption in Maughan Library, room 2.59”), and we’ll discreetly check the area as soon as possible. More details here.
The Nice List
Not every tag asked for change - lots of you shared lovely comments about our spaces, staff, and atmosphere. Here are a few of our favourites:
💬 “Lovely library vibes and nice staff.”
💬 “Quiet and peaceful vibes. SOOOOTHING.”
💬 “Staff always helpful – even when taking their lunch breaks!”
💬 “To Maughan – my favourite library and best friend: Thank you for the last academic year!”
💬 “Very clean and lovely library! Love how we can use KCH computers too. So useful.”
💬 “I love studying here – one of the best university libraries. Thanks for everything!”
💬 “The staff is very nice and friendly, and I like that there are different types of rooms.”
💬 “A lovely space for those late nights revising.”
These small but meaningful words really motivate our teams, who work hard to make the libraries welcoming, supportive spaces for everyone who uses them.
🎁 Festive Feedback Returns for 2025!
Your ideas, humour and honesty help us shape the libraries for everyone, so Festive Feedback will be back at the end of November.
Keep an eye out for Christmas trees, Naughty or Nice boxes, and wish tags in all our libraries later this month. We can’t wait to hear what you think this year - whether you’re feeling festively nice, or a little constructively naughty.
Thank you for every note, suggestion, and smile you’ve shared with us. Together, we’re making King’s libraries better, one festive tag at a time.
